What Does "Candid Wedding Photography" Really Mean?

If you’re dreaming about candid photos for your wedding, you’re not alone! It’s one of the most common things I hear from couples when they inquire about my services. But let’s talk about what candid wedding photography really means—and what it doesn’t.  Don't miss the picture gallery at the end of this post!

Weddings Are Naturally Candid Events

Your wedding day is full of moments that just happen: the laugh-out-loud reactions during speeches, the teary-eyed glance your parents give you as you walk down the aisle, kids doing their thing (which usually involves chaos and cuteness), and your besties breaking it down on the dance floor. These moments are *true candids*—completely unscripted and natural. My job is to step back, stay ready, and capture them as they unfold.

The Family Photo Exception

When it comes to family portraits, we shift gears into a more posed style. These are the photos where everyone is looking at the camera and smiling—classic and timeless. You might not consider them “candid,” but they’re equally important because they’ll likely end up framed on your parents’ mantel or sent out in holiday cards.

What About the “In-Between” Moments?

This is where *directed candids* come in. Sometimes, I’ll give you a little nudge to create a moment that feels natural and effortless. For example, I might suggest you stand by a window to put on your earrings so I can capture the beautiful light streaming in. Or I’ll set up a first look, so I’m in the perfect position to document those raw, emotional reactions when you see each other for the first time. These are still candid at their core because they capture real emotions—they just happen with a little bit of thoughtful planning.

Couples & Wedding Party Portraits: The Best of All Worlds

When we’re taking couples portraits or photos with your wedding party, I like to blend all three approaches:

  • True candids: Think sweet moments in between poses, like when you crack up at an inside joke or steal a quick kiss.
  • Directed movement-based prompts: I’ll guide you with fun prompts to get you moving, laughing, and connecting naturally. These aren’t stiff or overly posed—they’re designed to help you relax and forget the camera is even there.
  • Classic poses: These are the shots where everyone looks polished and put together—the ones your grandma will love.

Why the Blend Works

By combining these three styles, I can tell the full story of your day—from the big, emotional moments to the quiet, intimate ones you didn’t even realize were happening. My goal is to make you feel comfortable, capture the real *you*, and ensure your gallery feels like *your story.*
